What are varicose veins?
Nearly 60% of the population has varicose veins, with women showing a slightly higher prevalence. Usually appearing as twisted, ropy, enlarged or bulging veins, varicose veins are most commonly found on the leg. Varicose veins can cause pain, swelling, and discomfort and can develop into skin ulcers or blood clots. Without being treated, varicose veins will often get worse, as they are often indicative of an underlying progressive condition. Pregnancy, heredity, gender (hormones) and sitting or standing for prolonged periods are all risk factors for varicose veins.
What are spider veins?
Spider veins are smaller than varicose veins and are commonly found on the legs and face. Spider veins can be blue or red and often appear web-like. Spider veins are usually not a medical issue, but may be caused by similar underlying venous conditions to varicose veins and should be examined by a trained vein specialist.
