What are Varicose Veins?
Varicose veins are typically raised or bulging veins with a twisted or cord-like appearance which are most commonly found on the legs. Varicose veins affect approximately 40% of women and 25% of men, and often develop with advancing age. Varicose veins are usually a sign that your veins are not working properly. This often occurs when the one-way valves which facilitate return of blood to the heart fail to function properly and allow pooling and back-pressure in the lower legs. Predisposing factors to varicose veins include heredity, age, gender and trauma.
What are Spider Veins?
Spider veins are smaller red or blue veins that can appear like threads or webs. They can occur all over the body, but spider veins are most commonly found on the legs and face. Often they are simply a cosmetic concern, but they may also be a symptom of the type of underlying vein disease that causes varicose veins. Only a trained vein specialist using ultrasound assessment can tell for sure.
