Philadelphia Vein Treatment Services
Are you looking to get rid of varicose veins or spider veins in Philadelphia’s Main Line area? If so, The LUMEN Laser Center in Bryn Mawr, PA is your answer. Our state-of-the-art 3000 ft2 facility was founded and is directed by a nationally-recognized laser vein treatment specialist, Dr. Andrew Kwak. We offer leading-edge technologies for varicose vein treatment, spider vein treatment, and treatment of other vein conditions and are in-network with most insurance companies.
For many years, invasive vein surgery (‘stripping’) was your only option to get rid of varicose veins. Now, newer vein treatments like EVLT and sclerotherapy have been proven safe and effective, and have largely replaced the need for vein surgery. These minimally-invasive procedures are performed in the office, with minimal to no anesthesia. With superior results and virtually no downtime, there has never been a better time to get rid of varicose veins or spider veins.
Should you visit our Philadelphia vein treatment center, your care will be personally directed by Dr. Kwak, who will review your personal situation and prescribe an appropriate vein treatment plan.
Varicose Vein Treatment & Spider Vein Treatment Options
The LUMEN Laser Center provides the most advanced vein treatment options including duplex ultrasound, EVLT and sclerotherapy.
Duplex ultrasound
Ultrasound is a non-invasive, painless modality that allows the clinician to visualize the blood flow and anatomy of veins below the surface. Knowing this, your physician can recommend an appropriate vein treatment plan that addresses the entirety of your vein disease.
Visual Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy is the accepted gold standard for spider vein treatment. A tiny needle is injected directly into the vein, introducing a small amount of an FDA-approved chemical solution. This solution causes vein wall irritation, collapsing and shutting down the vein. The non-functional vein is eventually absorbed by the body. Sclerotherapy can be completed in a matter of minutes, although multiple sclerotherapy sessions may be required to achieve full clearance. Successful sclerotherapy requires skilled physician technique with a solid understanding of venous anatomy.
Ultrasound-Guided Sclerotherapy
For certain larger, deeper varicose veins and feeder veins (those not visible on the surface of the skin), ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy may be used. Generally a foamed (air-mixed) solution is used to allow greater surface contact in these larger veins.

Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT®)
Approved in 2002, EVLT (also called EVLA, and ELVeS) is a newer, minimally-invasive vein treatment used to get rid of varicose veins for which vein surgery was previously the only option. EVLT is performed in the office by inserting a small laser fiber directly into the vein, firing the laser into the vein wall, and sealing the faulty vein shut. EVLT usually takes less than an hour, involves minimal pain and anesthesia, no scarring, and patients are up and walking immediately after the procedure. Dr. Kwak is highly experienced with EVLT, having performed hundreds of procedures.
Transdermal Laser Therapy
Transdermal laser therapy, where laser energy is applied directly across the skin, is used for smaller spider veins ('telangiectasia' – usually less then 3mm in size) whose treatment can be difficult with sclerotherapy alone. It can be performed alone or in combination with sclerotherapy.
Ambulatory Phlebectomy
Ambulatory phlebectomy (also called microphlebectomy) is a technique used for vein removal of large, bulging varicose veins. Small incisions are made and the veins directly removed. Phlebectomy is done in the office with local anesthesia.
