What are varicose veins?
In healthy veins, blood flows from the limbs up to the heart. Factors such as age, weight gain, heredity, pregnancy, or physical stress can cause the valves that help conduct the blood flow through the veins to weaken. If they weaken enough, the blood starts to pool or even reverse within the veins. It is this pooling that results in the dark purple or blue knots and bulges visible at the surface of the skin where varicose veins have formed.
How do I know if I have varicose veins?
All of the following are symptoms of varicose veins:
- Leg veins with a ropy, bulging or knotted appearance
- Dark blue or purple "bunched-up" veins visible near the surface of the skin
- Tired or heavy limbs
- "Restless leg" syndrome during sleep hours
- Swelling in the legs and ankles
- Burning, itching, throbbing or general discomfort in the legs
What are spider veins?
Unlike varicose veins, spider veins are generally not accompanied by discomfort, but they are unattractive and can be indicative of greater circulation problems. Usually seen on the arms, legs, chest, face or head, spider veins are very fine and have a roadmap-like or cobwebby appearance. They appear at the surface of the skin and are usually red or blue in color.
Why is treatment for chronic venous disease important?
Along with being uncomfortable, varicose veins and venous reflux can signify more serious vascular problems affecting the heart and circulatory system. For both of these reasons, patients in Portland, Lake Oswego, West Linn, Tualatin, Sherwood, Wilsonville, Tigard, or Beaverton who suspect they have varicose veins or other problem veins should seek medical advice from the specialists at Bridgeport Vein Center.
