How to Explain Varicose Veins to Kids–without going to a vein doctor

Varicose-veinsFortunately, you don’t have to take your kids to a vein doctor for them to understand what those lumpy, bumpy, dark and kinda-ugly-looking things are on your legs (or their grandma’s legs). They’ll understand if you compare how a vein works with something the child understands.

Of course, the analogy you use will depend on how old the child is. If it’s a two-year-old–and he will likely point and question you if he sees varicose veins–you can probably get away with saying grandma has a boo-boo on her leg. You can say the vein doesn’t hurt grandma (if it doesn’t) and that it’s just something that happens to some people when they get old.
