Does My Insurance Cover Vein Doctor Visits and Varicose Vein Treatments?

does my insurance cover varicose veinsIt’s always nice to know your insurance company has you covered when it comes to costly doctor visits and procedures. Vein doctor visits and eventual varicose vein treatment fall into this category so the less you have to spend out of pocket, the better. But how do you know if your insurance will even cover varicose vein treatments? Here is how to find out:

First, you’ll need to know if your doctor accepts your health insurance. Call the office to find out. Having trouble finding a doctor? Find a physician easily by entering your zip code in the “FIND A PHYSICIAN” form to the right of this blog post.

Next, you’ll need to check your insurance policy to see what is covered and what isn’t. You can also call your insurance customer service phone number and ask a customer service representative this and any other questions you may have about your vein treatment coverage. It is also a good idea to inquire about the need for a  referral and co-pay amounts.

Most insurance companies will pick up the tab for varicose vein treatments if the veins are causing health related issues and are not just a cosmetic nuisance. You can find out from your doctor during your consultation if your varicose veins are causing health issues or not. Typically you would know if your varicose veins are causing health issues based on if you suffer from any pain or discomfort originating from the veins. If this is the case, your varicose veins may be more than just an aesthetic irritation. You can read more about the differences between cosmetic and health driven vein treatments on our blog, as well.

Talk with your doctor to see if he or she thinks that your varicose veins pose a health related issue. If your doctor thinks that they do, chances are that insurance will cover the cost of your varicose vein treatment(s).
